Training and Facilitation

All of our general training courses are able to be customized to include your tech stack, organizational or technical issues specific to your team or company, and can be adjusted to include more exercises and practice.

Add on individual coaching and follow up assessments for trainees is available.

We believe in the power of coordinated effort, therefore we currently only offer custom workshops to companies.  However, we have been adapting content and developing new exercises and will be offering individual sign up on select training courses starting Sept 2026!

Training

Incident Response 101
for engineers

Prepare your on-call engineers for their first (or 50th!) shift with a practical, interactive training course designed to leave participants feeling competent and confident in their ability to respond to system outages. We believe incident response is as much about the way responders support the incident coordinator as it is about the coordinator themselves. This course is designed to train the other 99% of the incident response team in effective coordination during high tempo events to allow teams to seamlessly support rapid resolution Our traditional course is 7.5 hours but content is modularized and can be shortened to 4 hours for an introductory briefing.

Executive Incident Response

Executive leadership plays a critical role in incident response. However, their presence has an impact. In this 90 min session, we cover evidence-based strategies and structures that support coordination during high criticality events. This is a 90 min session with the option for additional practice exercises.

Incident Leadership 101

An incident needs clear structure and decisive action to coordinate the efforts of a response team. But this doesn't necessarily mean command. Agility in software engineering teams comes from a strong, cohesive team focused on the sprint ahead while keeping larger goals in mind. Research has shown that a well coordinated team is actively adjusting performance to support the Incident Coordinator. This training course gives the skills needed to confidently direct a response effort as a lead. Participants will learn how functions are distributed amongst the team with clear expectations but flexible deployment. This model delivers impressive results with less stress, more collaboration, and strengthened teamwork. This session is 7.5 hrs when taken alone and 4 hrs when taken as an add on to the Incident Response 101. It can be taken by engineers or non-engineers.

On-call engineers need to work closely with other business functions including product, sales and marketing, customer service, legal, compliance and others. In this course, non-engineers learn how on-call responders work during an incident and how they can support their efforts with timely information and minimal interruptions. This is a 2 hour workshop with the option for additional practice training exercises.

Incident Response 101
for non-engineers
Learning Review Facilitator 101

An organization needs internal capacity to quickly elicit details about an event and identify meaningful insights for broader distribution. We offer a thorough but practical approach to post mortems. This is a 6 hr session with options for additional practice session. Each participant receives follow up coaching from our team to prepare for their first learning review and to debrief its completion.

Crew Resource Management for Software Teams

Crew Resource Management (CRM) is a system for team managing in complex and dynamic events. Developed in aviation to address accidents caused by human factors, it focuses on enhancing non-technical skills like communication, leadership, teamwork, and decision-making, alongside technical skills. This is offered as a 1, 2, or 3 day course. Ask us for our intake selection form to decide what is right for your company.

Crew Resource Management for Software Teams

Online coming soon!

Our one day course will soon be available as online modules that can be completed individually or as a team. Online courses are paired with a 90 min virtual session.

Fundamentals of Resilience Engineering

Resilient performance is a socio-technical function meaning reliability engineering isn't enough. This course looks at the technical and social aspects of resilience in large-scale distributed systems. Teams complete an assessment prior to the course and leave with a gameplan to integrate adaptive capacity design into their software, teams, and organization. This is a 7.5 hour course with 60 minutes of pre-work and a one hour follow up session ~4-6 weeks after training.

Fundamentals of Cognitive Systems Engineering

Cognitive Systems Engineering offers techniques for discovering new insights into your teams performance and engineering methods to address issues or amplify the practices that work for your team. This is a 7.5 hr course. Participants complete an intake form prior to the session and leave with 3 high value pilot projects identified.

Facilitation

High criticality Game Days

We work closely with your engineering team to design and facilitate challenging and high impact learning opportunities for the whole organization. Stress test the full range of capabilities you may need to handle Sev 0 events.

Incident Management Practice

We offer custom exercise development for incident management practice for your teams. From incident detection through to post mortem, we offer experiences to level up all aspects of incident management. Make your training time count with simulations designed from the latest research in rapid skill acquisition and accelerated expertise develoment. We also offer a catalogue of tabletop exercises based on general failure patterns. These were developed with leading industry experts to provide additional learning opportunities for your organization. These are a great option for teams that need help developing better coordination amongst participants.

Incident Investigation & Analysis

With over 20 years of investigation experience into serious incidents and fatalities, we bring a systematic, compassionate approach to difficult software events. Our investigations are based on a systems approach that looks at individual, team, and organizational performance as an integrated unit of analysis. We are able to flexibly deploy to respond to urgent needs with trained and experienced investigators.

Learning Loops Facilitation

We've designed a lightweight method for teams to identify opportunities for learning that fit into the flow of work. A learning loop can be conducted following a near miss, a surprising event, or when they have recognized they are missing knowledge or experience for their role. Based on cutting edge research into debriefing and cross-checking in critical events, this practice promotes continuous learning and breaks down barriers for asking for help. This is a 2 hr session with options for additional practice. Please note: this is not intended to be used in place of proper incident investigation techniques.
